Frequently Asked Questions and
Recommendations
As the PBT (Paper Based Tests) test sites fill up quickly, we encourage you to register for your exams early, don’t wait until the last week of regular registration and expect to get the date and site you want.
CAT (Computer Administered Tests) dates are not available at the beginning of the semester for the entire semester. We do not know for sure how the testing center releases these dates, but usually only 1-2 month dates are available at a time. If you want a CAT test date, you will need to check regularly on the site for when new dates/times are available. You will be able to take the PPR by CAT during student teaching if you desire. There is an additional $35 fee for taking the exam by computer.
If I fail a CAT exam, when can I register
to take the same exam via CAT?
If you fail a CAT exam, you must wait 60 days prior to registering for the same exam via the CAT.
Do I have to have my content exam(s)
successfully completed before I student teach?
No. Your exams have no bearing on whether or not you student teach. If you plan on completing an internship in lieu of student teaching with the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Culture, you will have to have all of your exams completed before you begin an internship.
Why do you need my Social Security No. in addition to my UIN number?
Your UIN means nothing to the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC). Depending on your question and the problem you need assistance with, if we need to look something up with SBEC, we have to have your Social Security No. This saves us time if we do not have to look it up on the university computer system.
